Impastor - Unfinished Business

Michael Rosenbaum starred in Impastor (2015-16) as "Buddy Dobbs," who gambles on passing as a small-town gay pastor while hiding out from his godless bookie.

Although the gay characters (one principal and a few very secondary) were all stereotypically flamboyant, flighty queens (but not quite as Jacked as Will&Grace), at least the series wasn't mean-spirited, and the church community that provided the story's backdrop was accepting and respectful. Pure fantasy-fiction I know: the writers depicted a Christian congregation as if they actually took the teachings of Jesus to heart (without any actual preaching).

The show was canceled after 20 episodes, with the cliffhangers left forever unresolved.

But being a sitcom, you know Buddy will have a happy ending.

For instance, maybe...

SPOILER ALERT! - The following is a make-believe ending for the series, but it includes references to what actually happened before the show got canceled.

  • Buddy was wearing his FBI wire, which is how the police knew to come running to the airport in the first place. So he's off the hook for that final scene.
  • Next, he convinces Dora that he took her phone into the woods #1: hoping to photograph the elusive Bohemian Waxwing he knew was so important to her, while #2 (mixing fact with fib): also investigating the corpse, which he ''suspected'' was the handiwork of Alexa. He could now "admit" he'd been investigating Alexa--really bank robber Christina Burke--all along since his ''FBI cover'' was already blown. He hid the evidence Dora uncovered because he was afraid the discovery would scare Alexa off before he could make his case. And, even though Alexa had disappeared, The Cobra knew where she'd hidden the murder weapon (as ballistics would prove), with Alexa's fingerprints all over it.
  • Detective Lovello, without the distraction of investigating Buddy, realizes his true feelings for Dora, quits the force in Portland, gets Sheriff Graham to deputize him, and works with Dora to reinvigorate the Ladner Chapter of the National Audubon Society. As for Dora herself, "When You Know, You Know." Scrunchie serves as ring bearer at the wedding.
  • Russell's devastation over Buddy not being gay is short-lived when he and Federal Agent Landecker become romantically involved, especially considering that Landecker is readily accepted by Russell's father since they had worked together at the FBI. (Plus, Landie's real-life handcuffs are the perfect complement to Russell's festive leather ensemble.)
  • At Ashlee's insistence, Alden got a retired judge attending the engagement party to marry them. Ashlee paid Buddy the $20,000 as promised, even though he didn't officiate. She realized his leaving was a blessing--the marriage wouldn't have been legal otherwise, since Buddy wasn't really an ordained minister. And even though Alden didn't ask for a pre-nup, Ashlee decides to take advantage of her new-found social status, especially since she can handily encourage Alden's propensity for "early release." His private embarrassment notwithstanding, it's better than any wedded bliss Alden ever got from Hilva, and publically Ashlee is the best trophy wife imaginable. Meanwhile, Ashlee insinuates herself into Alden's business affairs, while continuing many of her lucrative private endeavors on the side. In addition to the demands of the LBL (Lutheran Bowling League, which, surprisingly, she really enjoys), it's such a shame that Ashlee's new "cosmetics business" takes her out of town several nights a week. But what can you do?
  • The Church is shocked when they learn their new gay pastor is really a straight ''lawman,'' but with Dora's encouragement they forgive him and ask him to stay on as the new Social Services Director. Buddy considers the offer until Alexa is arrested for possession of marijuana during a routine traffic stop while driving through Texas. He will be expected to testify against her, so rather than risk exposure in court, Buddy takes the 20 Grand and sneaks away during the night, heading not to Mexico, but to Las Vegas...

    Or, you know, whatever.
